CLAIMED BY THE KING

by Lorelei Moone
Shifters of Black Isle, #1
Publication Date: July 20, 2018
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance, Shifters, Novella, Standalone

SYNOPSIS

Abandoned by her people, a young woman was being sent to her doom.

Kelly was going to be a prisoner; a slave. At least that’s what she thought as she waited for the mysterious giants that lived on the Black Isles to claim her. A human sacrifice, once every eight years. That’s what it took to keep mankind safe from these savages.

The human would ensure the survival of his bloodline. Whether he liked it or not.

Broc’s reign as King of the Black Isles had lasted seven years already. That was a long time to go without a queen and therefore, an heir. He knew what he had to do; to claim the human offering and make her his own.

When they met, it changed everything. A glimmer of hope, even of love, in unexpected places. But life on the Black Isles was far from simple. And there were powerful secrets, yet to be uncovered, that could change everything yet again.

Claimed by the King is the first in Lorelei Moone’s brand new fantasy romance series, Shifters of Black Isle. Shifters, magic and relatable characters; set in a mysterious, distant land, where anything seems possible, and yet all its inhabitants hold dear could be destroyed in an instant.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT- CLAIMED BY THE KING

Chapter 1

Once in every eight springs, a girl will be put forth by one of the coastal regions. A peace offering, a condition of the truce between the Giant Warriors of Black Isle and the men of the mainland.

  1. No one shall remain with the offering when the time comes.
  2. None shall attempt to lay eyes on or follow the giants.
  3. No girl shall ever come home, or her village shall feel the giants’ wrath.

By this ritual we are bound, so long as our truce may last.

My life is over.

Kelly sat down with her head in hear hands, making sure she could no longer see the eerily dancing shadows created by the candle on the kitchen table.

They never did waste much time between the lottery and the banishing.

Perhaps that’s for the best, Kelly thought. If I had a lot of time to think about this, perhaps I’d be less likely to cooperate.

Of course, she still wasn’t willing to accept her fate, no, she had other plans.

After dusk, she would be left on the shores of the Northern Sea, tied up to the strong wooden post erected solely for this purpose, until the giants claimed her.

Perhaps they wouldn’t like her. Perhaps they’d leave her behind, demanding a prettier, daintier candidate? Kelly could only hope as much. Or perhaps her ties would be loose enough to wriggle free, allowing her to run before the giants even arrived.

Ever since her mother passed when she was only eight years old, she hadn’t felt this alone in the world. Her father had betrayed her. He was meant to keep her safe, those were her mother’s last words. Keep Kelly and Ferris from harm, swear it to me.

Instead, what has happened under the watchful eye of their father? She’d been chosen in the lottery.

It’s an honor, he had said. Your sacrifice ensures the safety of our people for the next eight summers.

Kelly was to be made into a prisoner and slave, never to be seen again by her people, all of whom were just pleased none of their own daughters were chosen. She’d never got along with most of the villagers, most of whom took great pleasure in pointing out that her mother’s death was God’s punishment or other such nonsense. Kelly wasn’t lady-like enough apparently. As a child she’d played with the boys out in the field rather than stayed at home and helped with the housework. If that was sinful enough to warrant her own mother’s death, then she wanted nothing to do with such a God, or the feeble-minded people who believed in him. Of course she could have never said that aloud or they would have branded her a witch and punished her. So she had kept these thoughts to herself all these years.

And yet, she was chosen to protect those same people. Oh, the irony. She would love to see their faces when they realized that there’d be hell to pay for her upcoming escape. All those years playing with the boys would pay off. Now that she had reached a full eighteen years of age, Kelly wasn’t half as weak as most girls she’d grown up with.

A horn blew in the distance, signaling that her wait was over.

It was time.

Her father opened the kitchen door, his weather beaten face tense – the only indication so far that he even cared what happened to her. An honor. What a joke.

He’d get over the loss of his first born daughter soon enough, at least he still had a son to focus on.

Ferris would miss her the most. Three years younger than she was, he’d always looked up to his big sister with admiration rather than the disdain others had shown her. She had been there for him more like a mother than a sibling, making sure there was food to eat, clothes to wear, even toys to play with.

Their father had never realized that he had been suffering the most after their mother had passed. While father had stuck to his same old routine; heading off to the tavern after nightfall, as though nothing had ever changed, she had been there for Ferris.

Yes, Ferris would come looking for her as soon as he realized what had happened.

Father had conveniently sent him off on some merchant ship as a deckhand only weeks before the lottery. As if he’d known what would happen…

“Kelly. Our fate lies in your hands.” Her father waved her forward with an outstretched arm.

She hesitated for a moment, but took a deep breath and finally got up.

“Yes, father.”

Mother, I wish you were here. Kelly swallowed hard.

“Come in,” Father called out.

A group of villagers made their way inside the cramped little kitchen. They surrounded Kelly, who had already assumed the position expected of her: her arms were crossed behind her back, ready to be tied. They wouldn’t take any chances, because in the heat of panic, many an offering had attempted to flee in the past.

Oh, Mother. Why did you have to leave me to this fate?

Kelly’s eyes stung uncomfortably, though she tried not to let it show. A cold gust of wind from outside dried her tears.

As soon as the rough ropes were tightened painfully around her wrists, it was time to head towards the shore. A long procession had already formed outside Kelly’s modest family home, which in this dimmed light looked like nothing more but a dilapidated shack.

Of the sun, already vanished behind the mountain ranges towards the west, remained nothing but a reddish glow.

Fittingly gloomy, Kelly thought.

A few wisps of clouds did nothing to conceal the full moon shining down on Kelly’s march towards her doom.

Towards the front of the procession two drummers would set the pace for everyone. Some of the villagers carried torches, deep shadows cast over their solemn faces, making it seem like they were wearing masks. These were not the features of the ordinary folk of West Hythe. Tonight, everything had changed. More change was yet to come.

Kelly lowered her head as she stepped forward, positioning herself between the butcher and the tanner, two of the strongest, most impressive men of her village. Their function was ceremonial as well as practical during this ritual: supposedly they’d ensure she was delivered to the right people, and not snatched by anyone on the way to the beach. Actually, it was more likely they were there to prevent her from bolting out of fear.

The drums started to roll, before settling into a comfortable marching pace and the procession started to move. Kelly resisted for a split second, before being hauled forward by the butcher on her right.

Fine. I’m going.

The march was short, Kelly’s house was one of the few outside the village limits nearer the shoreline, and yet in her perception it seemed to last forever. With each step, her legs felt heavier.

But soon enough, the outlines of the misty Black Isles came into view in the distance, illuminated only by moonlight. The crisp cold sea shimmered in the light, like diamonds. Not that Kelly had ever seen a real diamond before, but she’d heard it said they were even shinier than fresh ice.

A glimmer of curiosity overcame her. That’s where she was headed; if she was to believe the stories. What secrets did those dark rocks out in the Northern Sea hide? Nothing good, for sure.

The villagers surrounding her had initially seemed calm and reserved, but now on the rocky beach, their faces had become tenser, more nervous. Typical, Kelly thought, I’m the one being served up to the barbaric giants, and they’re the ones who are scared.

The butcher’s large, calloused hands seemed to be trembling slightly as he attached the rope from Kelly’s wrist to the huge iron ring on the half-eroded sacrificial post. He didn’t even meet Kelly’s gaze, which despite the incoming darkness were burning with anger and betrayal. Her earlier tears had long faded in the harsh wind. All that remained was a growing urge to fight.

She’d find a way to escape. She had to.

“Sorry, lass. May God be with ya,” he whispered, before joining the procession again, ready to retreat back to the village.

Kelly pressed her lips together. God had nothing to do with what was happening here. She watched scornfully as everyone backed away.

It was one of the rules of the ritual. No one shall remain with the offering. None shall lay eyes on the giants when they collect their prize.

Those rules were now etched into Kelly’s mind, so often had she heard the stories. Every eight years, one of the coastal villages will put forth an offering. As prescribed, none of the girls had been seen since they were left at this exact spot.

This had been going on for as long as anyone in the village – even the elders- could remember.

All those lives ruined by such an archaic and stupid ritual!

There hadn’t even been any sighting, any evidence that giants still roamed the Black Isles. None, except that the sacrificial post was always found empty the morning after an offering. Anyone could have taken those girls. Who knew what had become of them.

Kelly glared at the retreating villagers, last of whom her father, who looked back once, but then hurried on home, or more likely, towards the tavern.

Bloody cowards, the lot of them.

How convenient to have a rule that nobody was allowed to stay and watch. Who knew who these giants actually were? Whether they even existed.

The last torch flickered away over the dune surrounding the beach, and the sound of the drum faded into the distance. The ritual was over, life could go on as normal until eight years from now when another girl was to be chosen from a neighboring village.

But for Kelly, the night was far from over.

A dense fog had rolled in from the Northern Sea, covering the beach like a damp blanket. Kelly blinked a few times, but was unable to see a thing. How long had she been here for? Minutes, hours? It was impossible to tell, although dawn still seemed impossibly far away.

Mother, don’t leave me here.

Kelly’s eyelids grew too heavy to remain open.

My darling, rest. You’ll need it, a familiar voice seemed to say.

Mother! Was she dreaming already?

The regular crashing of waves had already hypnotized her. One could only be upset for so long, until it took a toll. Kelly tried her best to lift the heavy blanket of exhaustion; to stay alert. But it was hopeless. It would take a lot more than some fog to scare her awake.

Warning: If you’re used to Jenika’s insta-love dirty books, you’re still getting it with this one. It has a HEA and features a totally obsessed hero who only wants one woman. Previously published under the same title, this story has been extensively reworked, new content has been added, and it has been re-edited.

My thoughts 💭

Tristan’s roommate moves out without telling her ahead of time but her bff’s boyfriend has a friend who needs a place to stay and thinks he’ll be a dependable roomie. Tristan and Kash has so much chemistry it could not be denied! They tried to do the just friends thing which was nice but not for them. Kash fights in an illegal fighting ring and wants to keep the dangers of his life away from Tristan but once he has a taste he has a hard time staying away! Tristan has been the only woman to get under Kash’s skin in a while and once she was there she didn’t want to leave. This was a hot and enjoyable read!

EXCERPT

Trying to do anything to her hair that wasn’t throwing it up into a messy, but stylish bun was out of the question. The humidity already had strands sticking to the back of her neck, and had she actually bothered with curling it, Vera was sure they would have fallen by now.

Not that it mattered much. She was supposed to be here on vacation—a time for her to relax and enjoy herself without care of anything else.

Which was why, despite the allure of a new project calling her name, she had left her villa and walked over to the bar where more than a dozen people already littered the floor and drinks were being passed all around.

After a minute of careful shuffling and quiet apologies, she made it to the bar, waiting until the bartender looked in her direction before she lifted her hand to signal she was ready to order.

A woman wearing a sheer dress that showed more than it covered stumbled off her stool, her date quickly moving after her. Glancing in their direction to make sure they weren’t returning, Vera claimed one of the empty seats.

Nearly to the second she sat, a figure moved from her peripheral and sat across from her, his smile wide and his eyes a little feverish.

Already drunk, if she had to guess.

The worst kind of men in a bar.

“You’ve got a great pair of legs on you,” he said with obvious approval as he blatantly looked down at her legs and lingered there.

Even if she had ignored the fact that she could smell the liquor on him, he wasn’t helping his case by being utterly clueless.

Ne trat’te svoye vremyaDon’t even waste your time,” she told him in Russian, hoping he would get the hint and just move away, but it was clear her not speaking English didn’t mean a thing to him.

If anything, his smile grew a little wider.

You,” he said a little louder, stressing the word, as if if he spoke louder, she would understand him better. “have nice—” then he pointed at her legs.

Vera rolled her eyes and turned in her seat, electing to ignore him. Hoping that if she pretended he didn’t exist for long enough, then he would just go away.

The bartender finally reached her, a customary smile curling his lips. “What can I get you?” he asked.

“Sex on the beach,” she answered, not bothering to even look at her unwelcome guest as his brow furrowed at her speaking English.

Idiot.

It was another few minutes of him stumbling over his words and blatantly eyeing her before she finally had her drink in hand and she could at least have this going for her if she would have to suffer through him not having a clue.

Her gaze moved around the bar, over the dancing couples of the floor, people seated at tables and enjoying food, but in her casual observance, that’s when she noticed him.

Even in the sea of people all around, it was impossible not to notice him. He stood out amongst the vacationers wearing khaki shorts and bikinis, already three sheets to the wind. Instead, he was in a pair of dark wash jeans, tailored to his muscular thighs, and a plain white T-shirt that did nothing to hide the muscles beneath it.

His attire might have been casual, but there was nothing about the man that seemed remotely casual at all.

And he was watching her.

She had thought, as she lifted her drink, tucking the straw between her lips, that he would look away once he noticed her attention on him. That he would be embarrassed to be caught staring as most men were, but he didn’t blink, or avert his gaze. A corner of his mouth tugged up into a slight, but arrogant smile.

He wanted her to know she had his attention.

Vera found herself smiling despite herself.

There were usually two type of men that wanted her attention. Businessmen who wanted her to heed to them—for her to be a pet of some sort. Smile when she was spoken to and be glorified arm candy.

Then there were the thrill seekers who thought that because her last name was Markovic that they would earn themselves some sort of prestige.

She doubted very much this man was the second considering he couldn’t possibly know who she was or even where she was from—and she was sure he wasn’t a part of her father’s organization because he was just a little too scruffy—but if he was the first … he would learn all too quickly that she wasn’t any man’s pet.

The man he was seated with, with sandy blond hair that was styled in that way that seemed to be in at the moment, was still speaking to him, but realized all too quickly that he no longer had the man’s attention. A fact that was solidified when he stood and threw back his drink before he left the private area where they were sitting to walk over to her.

She had every opportunity to get up and leave if she wanted to. But as he crossed the floor, people moving out of his way without him having to utter a single word, she remained where she sat, curiosity thrumming through her.

Vera couldn’t remember the last time she felt a thrill quite like this—and before he had even spoken a word to her. But there was just something about him that commanded attention.

The way he seemed to own the room. How broad his shoulders were. The unruly beard that she was now wondering how it would feel.

Lust, she thought a moment later. This was what lust at first sight felt like.

She counted down the seconds as his long-legged stride ate up the distance between them until he was suddenly there, right beside her, and she could smell the woodsy aroma of the cologne he wore that only added to his appeal.

“Is he bothering you, luv?” he asked, with a cant of his head in the direction of the man who hadn’t known how to take no for an answer.

That accent—rough around the edges, lilting around the L’s. That would have been enough for her to entertain him for more than a few minutes, but that, as well as the rest of him … he had her full attention.

“Listen, man—”

“Why don’t you fuck on off, yeah?” her stranger—her stranger?—said, hardly looking away from her. As though she were the only one worthy of his attention.

“Who the hell do you—” the man started, but hesitated when he got to his feet and realized just who he was up against.

He might have been tall, was even lean a bit, but he had nothing on her stranger. The man had a solid fifty pounds on him, if not more, and there was a hardness to him that said he really didn’t want to pick a fight with him.

Whatever he thought to say, he swallowed it back down and quickly made his exit without looking at either of them.

A smile fought its way onto her face. “I could have taken care of him, you know.”

“Oh, that wasn’t for you, luv,” he said as he took the man’s vacated seat. “That was entirely for me. I wanted your attention and now I have it.”

He’d had her attention long before now, but she didn’t bother telling him that. “And you are?”

He extended his hand in her direction, wrapping his much bigger one around hers, then closing tight. She didn’t think her hand had ever felt more smaller than it did now. “Alfie Shelby.”

Alfie.

How ridiculous that she even liked his name. “Vera Markovic.”

His expression didn’t change when she said her name, merely kept that same casual interest that had been there since he was across the room. That managed to make her relax further. He didn’t know who she was, or where she had come from.

She liked it that way.

“It’s a pleasure, Vera,” he said as he lifted her hand and briefly kissed the back of her knuckles.

It was such a contradiction—the hard man on the exterior compared to the gentleman like qualities he possessed. She couldn’t say she didn’t like it.

“Are you here alone?” he asked a second later.

“Smart girls know not to answer that,” she answered with another sip of her drink, gently extracting her hand. Curious or not, gorgeous or not, she wasn’t a fool. And she knew all too well the kinds of men that were in the world.

If he was offended, Alfie didn’t show it. Instead, his smile grew a touch. “Fair enough.”

His gaze left her for a moment as he signaled for the bartender who, despite already serving one customer, came right over. It made her wonder just who he was.

As he ordered—a rum and coke for himself, another of whatever she was drinking—Vera looked him over. It was second nature to look for tattoos that symbolized a life of crime. She could read any of them as well as any man in her father’s organization.

It had become common practice for her when she realized her father had men trail her on occasion.

But beyond a British flag that was tattooed over his heart, she didn’t see anything that would tie him back to her father, or any family that she knew of.

Another point in his favor.

As the bartender scurried away to fulfill their drink order, Alfie looked at her again. “D’you want to go out with me?”

Her brows shot up in surprise. “You don’t waste any time, do you?”

“Not when I know what I want,” he returned easily.

Confidently.

But she couldn’t say she minded.

“Okay,” she answered before she could talk herself out of it.

“Yeah?”

“Yes. I’m free tomorrow.”

“Six tomorrow then, luv?”

“I’m in twenty-six.”

He nodded once and moved back to his feet just as the bartender was setting their drinks on the bar between them.

She expected him to walk away, not that he had her affirmation, but he stepped closer to her, making her look up at him, but Alfie merely leaned in close enough to press his lips against her jaw then said, “Sweet dreams, Vera,” before he was grabbing his drink and walking back to his booth.

Vera wasn’t often intrigued by men enough to agree to a date within five minutes of learning their name, but Alfie … she was almost sure he would be impossible to say no to.

Get You Some by Lani Lynn Vale review!

Synopsis from Goodreads

You want some?

She snarls those words at him with barely concealed hostility the moment he arrives at her window to ask for her license and registration.

After a few choice words, he lets her go with not one ticket, but three.

Next time she should check the attitude at the door and realize that he’s a cop, and just doing his job.

Come get some.

Fast forward a week, and he’s still unable to think about anything else but her and her bad attitude—oh, and those sexy lips, angry eyes, and her promise to make his life hell.

Knowing he should stay away, he takes a step back and tries not to think about anything that has to do with those long legs, and that mouth that could be used for much better things than spewing venom.

Then she makes a mistake.

At an interview, she rattles off a random number to use as a reference for a job that she desperately needs, and that number just happens to be Johnny’s.

She’ll regret being so rude, and one day she’ll think twice when she decides to throw attitude toward a man like him.

Vowing to make her life hell, he decides to have a little fun.

Never get enough.

What he doesn’t expect is to fall for her.

The more Johnny learns about June, the deeper he digs his hole. Soon, he doesn’t know which way is up, and he’s just fine with that.

Over time, he learns that not everyone bothers to dig past her prickly demeanor and get to the woman that lives deeper.

When one too many citizens of Hostel, Texas tries to back her against the wall, he’s had enough.

After all, you don’t mess with what’s his.

My thoughts 💭

I love Lani Lynn Vale and this series! Johnny was tired of being treated like he’s fragile by his family so he decides to take a job in Hostel, Texas. June is hated by everyone in town because of the things her parents have done. Once I started reading I couldn’t stop! This couple is so cute but I hated when they wouldn’t communicate with each other! Like are y’all in a relationship after having sex or no? 😂 besides that I loved the book and would totally recommend it!

Annnndd I swear when June spelled adult to Johnny I immediately thought of Webbie’s independent song… I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T do you know what that means…😂😂😂😂

Stalked by Jamie Begley review!

Synopsis from Goodreads

There are some days it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed.

My girlfriend kicked me out. Then, even my dog didn’t want me, so he ran away. My boss fired me when I called to let him know I was going to be late. And to put the cherry on top of the crap sundae, I accidentally doused a woman in water who had more followers than brain cells.

As if becoming one of the most hated men in Queen City wasn’t bad enough, some lunatic was stalking the popular life coach I had soaked. The fucker should be running from Zoey, not watching, especially with me protecting her. Some fuckers must learn the hard way, and I’m going to be the one to teach him. You don’t mess with anyone who belongs to a Predator.

It was a perfect day … until I met Stump.

I found a new friend, reached half a million followers, and was on the brink of putting my past behind me when the crazy biker accused me of stealing his dog. To make matters worse, he then blamed me for people hating on him. He did that with no help from me. I don’t blame the dog for running away. I would, too, if I belonged to him.

My skills as a life coach don’t work on him. I might not be able to change the irritating Predator, but I’m not above using him to catch the one who wants me dead.

*WARNING*

This work of fiction is intended for mature audiences only. All sexually active characters portrayed in this ebook are eighteen years of age or older. Please do not buy if strong sexual situations, multiple partners, violence, child abuse, and explicit language offends you.

My thoughts 💭

I liked this book but Zoey was crazy there’s no other way to describe her. I’d say she was naive but how could she be when she’s a life coach🤷🏾‍♀️It seemed like Stump didn’t even like Zoey then he was in love and I was so confused.😂😂 When they finally stopped arguing and getting to their feelings I really enjoyed their story.
