My ex gives me a once-over and smirks. โOh, I get it. Looking for a husband.โ
I try not to snort. He doesnโt watch the newsโthinks itโs boringโand his family apparently hasnโt updated him about my new status. Maybe they disowned him. Wouldnโt that be great?
He continues, โI donโt know why you waste your time like this. Look, Iโm happy to let it go if youโll just see the light and change your mind about ourโโ
โDonโt hold your breath.โ Heโs dumber than I thought, bringing up the engagement when I still canโt find enough mind bleach to erase seeing him with my sister.
โThere you are,โ comes Sebastianโs voice from behind me. โOh, hello, Preston.โ
When he stops next to me, I put my arm around his waist. โWhat perfect timing.โ I smile up at him.
He gives me a mildly curious look, but wraps an arm around my shoulders.

โSeriously? Are you blind?โ I ask.
โI can see well enough to know those diamonds are tiny compared to the one I was going to give you!โ He points at my finger.
I drop my gaze to his crotch for a second before lifting it back up. โHis is both bigger and better than yours.โ
Preston looks like he just got punched in the face by Mike Tyson. Sebastian shakes against me in silent laughter.
โWhatโs so funny?โ Preston snarls.
โYou.โ Sebastian lets the laugh out. โYouโre third-rate comedy, but at least youโre entertaining.โ He wipes tears from his eyes.
Preston turns to me. โYou bitch! Itโs all your fault heโs mocking me!โ
Sebastian steps forward, pulling away from my arm around his waist, as the mirth melts from his face. โWatch your tone if you want to keep your teeth. Nobody talks to my wife with disrespect.โ
I pat his back a few times, to let him know it isnโt necessary for him to react like this. Part of me is flattered and moved that heโs defending me, but another part feels a bit unworthy of his protection becauseโฆ Well, I did force him to marry me.
Preston slashes the air with his arm. โSheโs my fiancรฉe!โ
โShe was. You call my wife your fiancรฉe again, and Iโll break your face.โ
