There’s only one way this can end …

Penny Dunsworth isn’t hiding.

Not anymore. An assassin turned legend, AWOL from her organization and hunted from all sides, nothing is going to stop her from finishing what she started. By the time she’s done with The Elite, no truth will be left untold, and maybe—just maybe—she can go back …

That is if she can make it out alive.

Luca Puzza only wanted to help.

His obsession with the white ghost has left him alone, estranged from his own world and family, and in constant danger. That doesn’t mean he’s going to give up. Besides, if he found her once, then he can do it again. And this time, he won’t be the one letting her go.

There’s too much on the line to fail.

She dares to wish for a life after pain. He dares to think they could have it. But it only takes one second for everything to change—one mistake could end it all.

Some say legends never die.

But what happens when they do?

*

NOTE: One Second After Another is book 3 in the After Another trilogy. It follows the same couple – Luca and Penny – from present to past, and back again. The books must be read in order. Be warned, the trilogy discusses a subject that may be triggering.

Rain clung to the streets of Brooklyn. Penny avoided the rivulets of water dripping from the eaves of buildings when she dared to stop underneath one as best she could.

The black windbreaker she wore did nothing to keep the wetness from seeping through to her clothes and skin underneath. Despite the chill in the air and the raindrops plastering what white-blonde strands of her hair managed to escape from beneath the jacket’s hood, she didn’t shiver.

Really, she barely felt it at all.

The discomfort was a comfort. Something else she was used to now. A constant sense of unrest—that nothing was right or good in a real way. A little bit of water wasn’t going to make it any better or worse.

Right?

Penny’s gaze swept the quiet Brooklyn street, thankful that the rain had decided to fall despite the weather forecast giving only a fifty-fifty chance of showers. It cleared the streets of almost everyone who didn’t need to be on them for one reason or another. With the sun starting to fall beyond the view of the high buildings, darkness had finally begun to creep through the streets.

She felt safe.

Or safer.

At least, to be out and about like she was. With barely twelve hours on the ground in New York, Penny had to start moving fast. Part of her plan had been put into motion the second she opened up the safe in her hotel room. It was where she kept several sets of fake identification, a burner phone—one The League didn’t know about—and cash she stacked up. She was running on a limited timeline to get certain things done before someone came looking for her.

Someone like The League.

Or The Elite.

If they hadn’t already.

Penny was a lot of things, but stupid wasn’t one of them. She was neither ignorant, nor arrogant. Certainly not enough of one or the other to think that her decision to go AWOL from her handlers would be met with sighs of resignation and little else.

And shit.

The Elite was already hunting her. Might as well make it worth it.

Stepping out from under the entrance of an apartment building, rain splattered against Penny’s face as she started her walk again. Cabs were an option if she cared to hail or call one. There was something to be said for walking, though.

Like the fact it let her think. She hadn’t been doing that enough lately. Well, not for herself, anyway.

Time to do that.

It wasn’t as though Penny was just walking to walk—she did have a purpose for being on the streets of Brooklyn in the middle of a cold rain while the sun crept lower and lower with every passing minute. That purpose became clear when she slipped into an alley two blocks away from the last place she stopped.

A car waited there.

The two-door Lexus coup flicked on its lights—once, and then twice, as was agreed upon—illuminating her wet figure in the mouth of the alley. Penny wasted no time slipping further down the alley to the passenger side of the car. Had it been less wet outside, she wouldn’t even have bothered with getting inside the vehicle.

Instead, she slipped into the passenger seat and shoved her hood back to expose the fishtail braid flipped over her shoulder that kept most of her hair out of her face. The guy sitting in the driver’s seat didn’t even turn to give her a hello, let alone a look.

“It’s in the back,” Carson told her.

“Everything?”

“Anything you asked for. I made a list.”

Penny rolled her eyes, but smiled, too. “You made a list?”

“You made it clear when you called that this was important. I didn’t want to miss anything. Not really good for business, you know?”

She did.

All too well.

Penny found the black duffle bag in the backseat like Carson promised. The independent contractor didn’t really have a specific job—he was known to do many things as long as the pay was good and came through. He’d do it without much talk, and he didn’t sell information when the chance was on the market, so to speak. She only knew of the guy through other assassins at The League who used him on occasion when in the New York area.

Or Jersey.

Vermont, too.

Carson was flexible.

He also wasn’t owned. By anyone. Penny liked that a lot more.

Dropping the duffle bag on her lap, Penny yanked open the zipper and spread the top apart to see what was inside. Carson hadn’t lied. A pile of burner phones, a small laptop, phone cards and more stared back at her. Sticking her hand into the bag, she moved things aside to find the wigs she asked for. There was also a case of FX makeup, a forty-five millimeter and nine with ammo and a silencer … and finally, antibiotics, a few knives, and a particular obsidian blade with a soft touch handle setting on top of new cargo pants and other black clothing.

Penny closed the bag. “It’s all there, thanks.”

Carson shot her a look, his tattooed hands never leaving the steering wheel when he asked, “Did you expect anything different?”

“Some of it was unusual.”

Like the makeup. And the specific knife she had wanted.

The man only chuckled, asking, “Yeah, I thought so, too. What, are you going to war or on a stage?”

“Maybe both.”

Anything was possible now.

In the inner pocket of her windbreaker, Penny pulled out an envelope that was only a little damp from the rain. She passed it over to the man in the driver’s seat. His payment that he took without as much as a thank you, not that she expected acknowledgment for their business together.

This was how it worked. They saw nothing. Knew nothing. Said nothing.

But just in case …

“If anyone asks,” Penny said when she reached for the door handle to exit the vehicle, “you didn’t see the white ghost in New York. It won’t end well for you if you bring up my name to anyone. Understood?”

Carson lifted one shoulder, unbothered but still recognizing that she warned him. “You know, I don’t usually work with people who make it a habit to threaten me, Penny.”

So be it.

Except …

Penny laughed as she stepped out of the vehicle, calling back into the man, “I’m not the one you’ll have to worry about seeing the threat through, though. Keep it in mind.”

There were always worst monsters waiting in the wings. Penny was only one of them.

She closed the door. The last thing she saw from the man was red taillights as he pulled out of the alleyway. That was fine with her.

One thing done.

She was one second closer to ending it all …

THIS IS THE PERFECT TIME TO CATCH UP WITH THE FIRST TWO BOOKS IN THE AFTER ANOTHER TRILOGY!

Rae Stewart

Talented. Fierce. On top of the world.

Life couldn’t be better.

My gaming channel is number one, my sponsors keep coming and that’s just my online persona. In the real world, I’ve got some of the best friends ever.

I’ve got all I could ever want.

August Ryan

Determined. Competitive. Tired of coming in second place.

For months I’ve been competing with the hottest and most talented gamer girl for number one. Not even teaming up with her can get me that coveted top spot.

So I’m pulling out all the stops and taking this online competition into real life.

When two worlds collide, Rae finds a new happiness that she didn’t know she was missing but August isn’t so lucky.

Is there a future for these two rivals or will August be lost in a past he can’t leave behind?

EXCERPT

“I know who you are.” He drops casually as we walk side by side. Each of his steps is two of mine, but I manage to keep up. I side-step a little closer to get a nose full of super hot man smell. He smells like the woods, and soap, and sexiness. I’m screwed.

“Oh? And who am I?” I get a small knot in my stomach. I do occasionally get a fan in Words for Nerds, but this guy knowing me is enough to make me a little nervous.

“RaeGun. The pro gamer. I saw you win the Forever Quest tourney last year.” August keeps walking, but I stop. “What? Too much?” He turns to give me a sly smirk.

“Too much? Nah. That’s me.” I admit, still not moving from where I stopped a few feet behind him.

“What? I don’t look like a gaming enthusiast?” August gestures to himself and I drag my eyes from his shaggy brown hair to his gray Converse. Us nerds love Chuck Taylor.

“Not really. Do I?” I step back a little and hold my arms out, doing a quick spin. My shirt has an N64 controller on it, and I look every bit like the gamer I am.

“No way. I’d never guess if I hadn’t seen your win on Glitch. The shirt, the attitude, the earrings, none of that gave it away.” I reach up and touch my Triforce studs. August laughs.

“I like your sarcasm. It makes you even hotter.” I laugh with him and catch up to where he stands.

“I do what I can in that department.” He makes it to the door a beat before me and turns to face me, making me crane my neck to look up at him.

“It’s working for you. Congrats.” He takes a step toward me and I meet his gaze. “Is this the part where I give you my number?” I reach for my back pocket and pull out a pen.

“Are we going old school here? I left my phone in the car.” He extends his hand and I take it in mine.

“Your phone? Why would I need that? This has been the only way to exchange numbers since the beginning of time.” I write my number on the back of his hand and he watches intently. When I’m done, he studies the number.

“Obviously I was mistaken about needing my phone. This method of number collection is far superior.” He nods and reaches to rest his hand on the door. “Does the three day rule still apply?” He looks down at me, dead serious.

“Three day rule? This is a nineties edition number exchange, not a fifties. Are you secretly sixty? You don’t look a day over forty-five.” I try to look confused.

“Busted. You caught me and I’m far too old for you. This is a bad idea.” He laughs.

“Yeah, so we’re super lame. Anyway, call me. It was nice to meet you, August.” I lean and push the door open for him.

“Likewise. Lame is a great way to describe this entire encounter. I’m usually more smooth, but you caught me off my A game.” He steps toward the open door and I try not to shiver in the crisp night air.

“I’ll expect better lines when you call. Have a good night.”

“You too, Rae.” And with that, he steps into the night and I watch him walk to his car.

ABOUT TARRAH

I am a contemporary romance author who is all about the feels, with the twists of sexy mixed in between. I have been writing since before I can remember.  Writing has always been a passion, that was kept it under wraps, stayed on the back-burner and never vocalized or followed through with my desire to be a writer, until I read a horrible book and thought: ‘I could do better than that!’

I am originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, but living in beautiful San Diego with my little family while working during the day as a social worker working with the homeless.

My writing style is that I try to write realistic characters and situations. I want my books to be relatable and not to create too many eye rolls.

Thematically, the novels are friends to lovers, random hook-ups and office romances mixed with a whole lot of fun in the middle.

They say you can’t go back but …

Penny Dunsworth was broken.

Before she became the white ghost, she was already unrecognizable. A troubled teenage girl with monsters that couldn’t be slain, and an irrational crush on the only man she considered a friend. Her one crime was daring to think she might finally be free.

Luca Puzza was only trying to figure things out.

His days are balanced between his duty and worth. He can’t seem to make it all work, but that doesn’t stop him from trying. Somethings are just more important—like the girl with the haunted eyes who seems to trust him. He only ever wanted to help.

The past never stays where it belongs—why would it?

It’s the only thing left to warn about the future.

*

NOTE: One Breath After Another is book 2 in the After Another trilogy. It follows the same couple – Luca and Penny – from present to past, and back again. The books must be read in order. Be warned, the trilogy discusses a subject that may be triggering.

Penny did her best to avoid staring at the home in front of Luca’s parked vehicle because the weight of her actions had finally settled on her shoulders. The man in the driver’s seat said nothing as she fidgeted with the gold chain that hung from the rearview mirror. Luca didn’t even hint that it was time for her to get out of the car and head inside to see Naz and Roz.

No, he just waited her out.

“I probably made a bigger problem with the caseworker today,” Penny muttered. “And the school, right?”

Luca tilted his head her way. “Likely.”

Penny rolled her eyes. “Naz and Roz will tell me it’s fine. They’ll handle it like they always do.”

“But that doesn’t help, does it?”

Her gaze snapped to his.

He only clarified with, “The guilt, Penny. It doesn’t help with the guilt.”

Air slipped past her lips in a harsh woosh when she admitted, “No, it doesn’t help.”

“That should tell you something.”

Should it?

“What, then?”

Luca smiled. “That you know they love you … and you love them.”

Penny released the chain hanging from the mirror and rested back in the seat. “It’s more than just Naz and Roz. You, too. You care about me, too.”

“Of course, I do. You have my number, you know how to use it, and you’re more than welcome to do so, Penny.”

Right.

He cared.

Platonically.

As he should.

Penny wished she could say the same but instead when her stare met his again, the truth slipped out before she could stop herself. “I’m not sure I should, actually.”

“What, call me? You did today. It didn’t end so bad.”

Except …

“What happens when I keep calling and you keep showing up?” Penny asked, shrugging and putting her attention on anything but the handsome man in the seat next to hers. “I’m already confused about … you. The more you’re around, the worse it’s gonna get. And it’s not your fault, you don’t even act like you notice me or how I am when you’re around. I’ve just never—”

“Liked someone before,” he murmured.

God.

Was it that obvious?

Even he knew?

Penny sighed, saying nothing more except, “I don’t know how to deal with any of it, I guess.”

“Penny.”

She didn’t answer.

Didn’t even look at him.

Wasn’t it bad enough that she went as far as admitting her crush when he hadn’t even given her the suggestion he felt the same way? She thought so.

Penny. Hey, look at me for a second.”

She did.

It was hard.

Luca grinned when her stare finally met his, like he was fucking proud of her or something. “There you are, huh? Don’t be scared to show people who you are, Penny.”

“Easier said than done.”

“I know. And … as for the rest, just know I’m safe. For you, I’m a safe place. Sounds kind of stupid, I know, but it’s true. Have a crush on me. Like me. Even if it’s silly. It’s still safe, Penny, because you should also know I’m never going to cross a line.”

She nodded.

He was the good guy. Every chick flick had one although those men rarely looked like Luca. The girl’s best friend who was always waiting in the wings to save the day. The unintentional hero who rarely got the girl but didn’t seem to need to, either.

Good guys weren’t real, though.

Except, she had one.

Right?

Luca winked, adding, “Ever, okay?”

“Okay.”

Everyone lied.

Or that’s what life taught her.

But right then, she believed Luca.

“It’s not that I don’t trust you,” she admitted, grabbing her book bag from the floor of the car. “It’s that sometimes I think about what would happen if you did cross a line. I think about it more than I should.”

Luca glanced her way, the hard lines of his face softening as his mouth opened to respond. Before he could say anything, Penny leaned over the seat and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek, saying, “Thank you for helping me today.”

And then she was gone.

She didn’t look back, either.

It was just easier.

Screams. Gunshots. A mighty roar. Deafening silence.

Eden jerked awake as the nightmares broke through her sleep. She gasped when she found herself unable to move. Was this another nightmare? She glanced wildly around the room, trying to make sense of where she was, and found herself staring into the brightest blue eyes she had ever seen. The mud-streaked face from her nightmares was real.
She gasped again and tried to pull away. He held tight a moment before loosening his grip, clear disappointment in his eyes.
Eden scrambled back, and something behind her tumbled across the floor. He sat up and moved around her to collect whatever it was she had disrupted. In the gray light of early morning, she saw him put pieces of skinned mango on a leaf that was bigger than his two hands cupped together.
He grunted, chuffed, and even whistled at her as he held out the mangoes. Eden stared at the food, her stomach grumbling on cue at the sight of the fruit. His mouth curved into a smile, and he nodded to her in encouragement. She reached across the space between them and took a mango, trying not to stare at him. Much of the thick mud from earlier had fallen away to expose his body to her view, but his face was still darkened with it, making it hard to fully see his features aside from those wildly blue eyes.
The trauma of yesterday was still in the back of her mind, but she could now focus on her mysterious savior, this wild and strange forest god. And a god he was. There was a mighty strength to his limbs, and he had a noble bearing that held her fascinated—and more than a little frightened. She was helpless against this man. If he desired it, he could take whatever he wished from her. Yet he gazed upon her with gentle eyes and offered her mangoes.
She took another piece of fruit and was floored by the devastating effect his responding smile had on her stomach, which suddenly filled with butterflies.
“Thank you,” she said, only she felt silly doing so, since it was obvious he didn’t understand her. She bit into the fruit and sighed at the sweet taste. He watched her eat two more pieces before he finally ate one himself. Then he reached for something on the floor and held it out to her.
Midday sunlight caught on the bright gold of a long necklace. It was an ancient-looking necklace with a huge diamond pendant hanging from the center.
“Oh my God . . .”
She was almost afraid to touch it, but he pushed it into her hands before she could refuse him. He curled her fingers around the necklace and patted her closed hands with a tenderness that left her feeling breathless.
“Thank you. It’s beautiful.” She stared at the necklace, and he watched her expectantly. Eden did the only thing she could think of and put the necklace on. He grunted and smiled, as if satisfied with her reaction, and then he opened the trapdoor in the center of the room. He turned, exposing his back to her, and pointed at himself.
It looked like she was going for another ride. She climbed onto his back, more aware than ever of the heat of his body between her thighs, but the dried mud that coated his body was staining her clothes, and she prayed she could find her way to a river or stream or even a pond to get washed up.
He began the descent, and when their feet touched the ground, he let her off his back. The wild man held out a hand to her, and she took it. It was strange to feel connected to this nameless mystery man, but Eden was beginning to trust him as he led her through the jungle. Besides, what choice did she have?
After about half an hour, at least by Eden’s guess, she heard the roar of a waterfall and her heart leapt. She might be able to clean herself off and get something to drink. She glanced back down at herself and cringed at the mud and blood staining her clothes.
The wild man took her straight to a large pool at the base of the waterfall, which poured over a mountainous area nearly two stories tall. The sight was breathtaking. The waterfall was as clear as glass, cascading into a frothy whiteness that settled into gentle ripples across a wide pool that was clear as the sky above.
“Is it safe?” she asked as the man took her to the edge of the water. “I know you can’t understand me, but—”
He turned to face her, his gaze solemn and his lips parted as he whispered one word. “Safe.”
It was almost a hoarse grunt, as though he hadn’t spoken in ages, perhaps ever. Yet she recognized that word, and her world spun as she realized that she might have a chance to communicate with this man.
“You know English?”
He nodded uncertainly.
“How much can you speak?”
He held up his hands and shrank them together in the air.
“Okay, how much can you understand?”
His hands widened apart.
A flood of questions filled Eden’s mind, but right now she had to focus on more pressing needs. The kind that pressed against her bladder.
“I need to use the . . . Wait, you probably don’t understand what a restroom is. I need . . . privacy?” As embarrassing as it was, she squatted down, miming her intentions.
He nodded toward a clump of trees.
“Stay close,” he said in a hoarse whisper.
Eden went over to the bushes and did what needed to be done before she rejoined him at the water’s edge.
“Is it deep? I can swim. I’m just worried.”
“Deep, yes. Safe.” He removed the gold leaf crown from his head and set it down in the grass. Then, without warning, he untied the strips of leather that held his loincloth on and dove into the pool.
Eden had a brief but glorious glimpse of his muscled ass as he disappeared into the water. A cloud of mud circled around where he had vanished, sullying the pretty blue water. Eden waited for him to come up, wondering what he looked like beneath the layers of mud. But long seconds passed and he didn’t come up.
Had something happened to him down there? She took off her hiking boots and socks before hastily wading into the water and diving under to search.
Her heart thundered against her ribs as she dove beneath the surface, trying to find him. She opened her eyes, searching, but all she could see was a blue haze and white bubbles from the waterfall. She surged back up to the surface for air and then shrieked as something curled around her foot and pulled her back under.
Water covered her head, and she reached down to claw at whatever had grabbed her leg, but it was already gone. She swam back up to the surface with visions of crocodiles and snakes in her head as she sucked in a lungful of air. The water beside her churned, and the wild man’s face appeared. He shook his head, and his long dark hair whipped around his face. He ducked below the water again and came back up, allowing Eden her first glimpse of his face unmarred by mud.

My God.
She couldn’t have guessed what lay beneath the heavy coats of mud. The chiseled features of a god matched his muscled form. There was a slight cleft in his chin, and the tan skin of his face made his blue eyes glow even more brilliantly. It was difficult to look away from his face. Dark shapes colored his shoulders. Tattoos? They looked tribal in design. She’d never been into tattoos before, but they only added to the mystique of this man.
He swam slowly around her, his lips curved in a playful smile, then suddenly splashed water at her. Eden gasped and instinctively splashed back at him. He let out a deep, rich laugh that made her melt. They swam and played, not quite touching each other, but close enough that she was aware he was completely naked. Eventually her skin began to prune, and she realized that she was drenched in her only set of clothes.
Now exhausted, she started to go back to the shore, but the man caught her hand and motioned for her to swim toward the falls. She followed him and blushed to the roots of her hair as he climbed out of the water and onto a small rock ledge, leaving nothing to the imagination. Then he vanished behind the waterfall. She gripped the smooth rocks at the base of the ledge and pulled herself up, finding it easier than she expected. Then she followed him behind the glass-like curtain of water.
The cave behind the falls was deep and dark, and she could barely see the outline of the wild man ahead of her.
“Wait! I can’t see.” Her voice echoed all around her despite the roar of the falls behind them.
A warm hand caught hold of hers, and she was pulled deeper into the darkness before they stopped. Her feet touched something soft. Animal fur? She knelt and touched it. Yes, it was, but what kind she couldn’t tell. Hands touched her shoulders, pulling lightly at her clothes as though to remove them.
“Wait . . . What?”
“Too wet,” he said in a low voice. “Animal skins need to dry.”
“Skins? Oh, my clothes.” She glanced around, not quite able to see him clearly. Maybe it would be okay to take off her clothes in the dark? Eden hesitated a second and then peeled off her clothes, even her panties.
“Sit,” he urged, and she did, tucking her knees up to cover her body.
“Hey, do you have a name?” she asked the tall, warm man sharing the darkness with her.
“Thorne.”
“Thorne? Just Thorne? No last name?” Eden tried to see his face as he knelt down beside her on the bed of furs. Her heart jumped in nervousness at what he might do next.
“Son of Keza,” he added quietly.
“Is Keza your father?”
“Mother.” The word was spoken with a fierce tenderness.
“Is she here? Does she live with you?”
There was a long silence. “No. Thorne left. Thorne see them sometimes.”
Eden nearly jumped when she felt a hand touch hers. Thorne stroked a fingertip over her knuckles, the gentle touch exploring and soothing rather than threatening.
“Sleep,” he said in the mantle of darkness. “Thorne protect.”
Eden knew she shouldn’t lie down in her undressed state, nor should she bury her face in the furs and start to rest. But the makeshift bed was soft against her bare body. It was only late afternoon, but she was indeed tired. She was a little cold, but Thorne soon wrapped the furs around her, and she could smell an inviting masculine scent clinging to them. His scent. Clean man and waterfall with a hint of mango. It was a scent she would dream of for the rest of her life, just as she knew she would dream of this wild forest god.
