New Release! Essence Of Fear by Bethany-Kris
ESSENCE OF FEAR
by Bethany-KrisA Boykov Bratva NovelPublication Date: June 22, 2020Genres: Adult, Romantic Suspense, Organized Crime. Erotic Romance, Standalone

The allure of fear is learning to love it.
Viktoria Boykov has heard it all—cold they call her. The spoiled bratva princess. She knows very well what people say when her back is turned. She doesn’t mind; let them talk. It’s better for people to assume what they want about her than for them to know the truth … until him.
Pavel Kotov knows what people say—death they call him. The Boykov dog. He’s heard all the whispers locked away in the cells of the Compound. As the reaper for the bratva, his life owned by someone else, he knows what they say doesn’t matter. His life has never mattered … until her.
He’s terrifying.
She’s terrified.
Viktoria only wants to keep running from her past. Pavel doesn’t have a life to run from. Freedom is the one thing they both crave—for entirely different reasons. But this life is vicious, and scars like the ones they wear will never fade.
Together, they could have everything.
Or are they just pawns to a bigger game?
*
Note: Essence of Fear is a Boykov Bratva standalone.

“What is the card for?” she asked.
Pav hummed under his breath and eyed her from the side. “A party to celebrate something beautiful.”
“So, you really do need a generic card?”
“I suppose.”
It took her all of three seconds to find a generic card with the usual congratulations stamped on the front, and the usual platitudes on the inside. She grabbed the matching envelop, and handed it over to Pav, too. He took them with the same smile as before.
“There you are.”
She turned to walk away, but it was his hand quickly curving around her wrist that stopped her. She froze all over, and a small tremor worked its way through her sinew. Air sucked fast and sharp into her lungs.
At the same time, she enjoyed the warmth of his palm against his skin. She liked the way his fingers tightened against her skin, and the pressure of his fingertips pressing into her racing pulse point. There was no way to hide the way his touch both terrified her and confused her.
Excited her.
Viktoria looked back at Pav but said nothing.
He quirked a brow. “I was going to say thank you.”
She nodded. “You don’t have to.”
Now, let me go.
The words came out in her mind, but not out of her mouth. She wanted to say them, and she didn’t want to say them at the same time.
How strange …
“Da. I was going to say it, but now I want to say something else.”
Viktoria wet her bottom lip, muttering, “So, say whatever it is, then.”
“You’re still scared of me?”
She blinked.
Her mouth worked, though.
“Yes,” she whispered.

“Kolya,” Ivan greeted, “since when do you make your way to my part of town?”
“Since tonight.” Kolya drummed his leather-clad fingertips to the worn bar and gave Ivan a look from the side. “Seems I’m needed down this way, unfortunately.”
“Thought you weren’t the type to—”
“Could I get you something?”
Kolya stiffened.
That voice.
Soft, and sweet, yet bubbly and friendly.
Not at all what he expected to greet him when the bartender made his—no, shit, apparently her—way down to serve him. It was something about the fact there was a woman here … a woman with the softest, sweetest tone he had ever heard … that made him hesitate.
And tense.
A knot of stress pulled his shoulder blades together.
Still, he looked at the woman.
Pixie-like in her features, the top of her head would barely reach his chest. He could probably use her fucking head as an arm rest when he was standing beside her. Her tiny button nose accentuated the rest of her dainty features. She had small lips, pink and uncolored by makeup or stain, that smiled even though he found hesitance and uncertainty in her blue eyes.
And blue.
Damn, so blue.
Like the ocean right before a storm.
Or a sky on a cloudless summer day.
But her hair was pin-straight hanging over her shoulders, and jet-black.
Like the darkest night.
Like tar.
Like his soul.
She wasn’t particularly dressed up, but she wasn’t dressed down in her outfit, either. Simple straight-leg, tight jeans and a bohemian-style blouse. It told him she had dressed to look appropriate, but not draw attention.
He didn’t blame her.
The only attention a woman like her—delicate, beautiful, and sweet-looking—might find here was the bad kind.
Kind of like him.
Because, yeah, Kolya noticed her.
Something he didn’t do.
“Maya, stop standing there,” Ivan barked, drawing Kolya’s attention away from the woman, “and make yourself useful, yes? Go do anything else but be near me.”
“Sorry,” the woman—Maya—whispered.
Quickly, she scurried off.
“I wanted a drink,” Kolya groused, shooting Ivan a glare.
Really, he just wanted Maya to come back.
So he could tell her to run.

He’s Pink, the personal enforcer for the boss of the New York mafia. She’s Gigi Rey, a supermodel known across the globe.
They live two entirely different lives but before the mob and the fame, they were Lev Arsov and Gigi Parker. Two people struggling to make it—who met by chance—before life got in the way.

“Nobody followed me,” she promised, clearly noticing his stare. “No security, no paparazzi … hopefully no fans, but sometimes that happens so if it does, just let me say hi, do my thing, and don’t answer anybody’s questions because they will try to get literally anything they can out of you. Fair warning.”
Lev’s attention went back to her in an instant. “Oh, no worries on that. I wouldn’t mind if you did need to bring somebody, by the way. It’s probably a normal thing for you, right?”
“Regular … not something I’d call normal.”
“Point taken. Wanna sit down?”
Her brilliant, gorgeous smile was back just like that. “Yeah, let’s sit. Nice place. Not my usual style, but … it serves the purpose for keeping me out of sight, right?”
Lev’s laughter came out dark and husky as he reclaimed his stool, and she took the one on his right. “Sorry, would you have preferred a club?”
She peered his way, and her dark lashes fanned wide with black mascara distracted him from the bartender’s approach with the whiskey sour he’d ordered for Gigi. “I preferred to catch up with you, Lev. I didn’t care where we did it.”
Right.
He would keep that in mind.
“And you remembered, too.”
“What’s that?” he asked.
Gigi winked and pointed at the glass the bartender set on top of a white, monogrammed napkin in front of her. “Whiskey sour. My drink of choice.”
A pointed look from Lev sent the bartender spinning around to head for someone else down the bar when the man opened his mouth like he was going to say something to the woman next to him. Gigi’s light laugh might have embarrassed him for being so possessive over her time and presence but fuck it … he wasn’t going to apologize for it.
“I think he knows who you are,” Lev said, palming the beer on the bar that he’d been nursing long before Gigi arrived. “And I didn’t forget anything about you, Gigi. Not a single damn thing.”
Chancing a look at the woman on his right, Lev found her nibbling on her bottom lip while her striking green eyes lowered to appreciate the tailored fit of his white button-down and how he’d rolled the sleeves up his forearms.
Painted a dusty rose color, her plush mouth threw him back in time without any warning. He could still remember the way her lips felt against his skin. How she kissed him hungrily. All the sounds that mouth of hers could make for him.
Not a date, he told himself. This isn’t a date, Lev.
But she sure looked like it.
“Although to be fair to the bartender,” Lev added in a murmur, “he wasn’t the only man in this place that couldn’t stop staring at you. I think every single man in here—”
“But I was only looking at you, right?”
“At, or for?”
Gigi wet her lips, and drummed her black-painted, stiletto fingernails to the glass in front of her. “Could it be both?”
“I thought you wanted to catch up?”
Unashamed and brazen, her sexy smile turned on him when she replied, “I do … maybe more than I should. Part of me thinks we never really finished what we started, Lev.”
“I didn’t know we started anything.”
“We wouldn’t be sitting in this bar if we hadn’t.”
Well …
Lev barked out a hard laugh. A shitty attempt to hide the fact that her words and their frank truth slammed into his chest like a wrecking ball. “All right, let’s catch up.” He spun sideways on the stool, facing her entirely with the beer firm in his palm. He tipped the bottle up for a sip, fully enjoying the way she watched his throat bob with every swallow. Setting it back to the bar but not turning back in his seat, he said, “Tell me all about Gigi Rey, sweetheart.”
Gigi rolled her twinkling eyes and waved a hand high. “Her? She’s nobody.”
“Never heard a worse lie.”

EXCLUSIVE RELEASE EXCERPT
“Still sneaking around, fox?” His chest pounded.
She slowly pivoted. Her head turned left to right, sweeping the area. She couldn’t see him in the shadows by the tire rack.
He stepped out under the glow of the floodlight. Her gasp traveled the empty space between them. Every muscle in his body tensed at the sight of her. He tossed his smoke to the side.
That beautiful red hair. He had known with everything inside of him, she would be wearing it long and full. Gray eyes stared at him, studying his face. He couldn’t help looking down and seeing the woman the girl had turned into, and what he found was perfection.
The added curves on such a petite body rocked him back a step. Her breasts that would’ve barely filled his palm years ago would now overflow his hand. He gazed lower. The urge to ask her to turn around left him breathing heavily at the changes in her.
It was Scarlett, but a Scarlett he was seeing for the first time.
“Nelson?” she said, drawing out his name.
His balls constricted in pleasure. All that sweetness nobody ever gave him, but her.
“I heard…” She blew out her breath. “I heard you were home. I didn’t know…I didn’t know if you’d come back here.”
Pain gripped him. She believed the rumors floating around about him.
“You better tell your friends and neighbors I’m back.” He pulled the pack of cigarettes from his pocket and lit another smoke. “Maybe you can set up a Neighborhood Watch. You’re good at sneaking around.”
She recoiled frowning. “You’ve changed.”
He exhaled harshly. “That’ll happen when you spend ten years in prison.”
“Are you okay?” She stepped forward.
His body hardened. He flicked his cigarette out into the gravel, unable to hold it any longer because his hands shook. She was too close. He couldn’t allow her to get near him, touch him, care about him.
She stopped two feet away from him. Her gaze followed the lit coal burning on the rocks. “You’re not happy to see me?” she whispered.
She acted as if he’d personally hurt her, that ten years shouldn’t have changed him. That she could sneak on the property and be pissed at him for how he’d turned out.
“Go home,” he whispered back.
“I…” She tilted her head. “Is there anything you need?”
He needed a woman. He needed her.

EXCLUSIVE REVEAL EXCERPT
Until, of course, she heard someone mutter, “If you’re gonna do that, could you fucking move it outside to the alley like every other bitch that’ll get on her knees does, and give someone else the table?”
Vanna stiffened the second Bene’s lips stilled against her own. She physically felt the change in his posture, and sensed it, too. Like his playful, sexiness had left him just like that, and the heat in his gaze suddenly burned with more rage than it did lust when his stare met hers.
She didn’t know why she thought to speak to defuse the situation, but she still did. Or at least, she tried. “It’s fine. Just ignore him. It’s o—”
That was all Vanna managed to say before Bene pushed away from her. He spun sideways, as though he had just known the asshole came up to his right without even looking that way when he had been distracted with her. His fist was already flying, crashing into the face of the man before Vanna even had time to think about what was happening.
And then as fast as it happened, it was over. Bene spun on his heels, a dark grin tugging at his lips when her wide—slightly amused, but also terrified—gaze met his. Yes, she’d seen a man hit another man over her before. But no, she had never quite liked it the way she did right then.
The man hadn’t even hit the floor before Bene’s hand found hers, and he pulled her off the pool table, grabbing her bag from the floor at the same time, and moved them toward the back entrance of the bar. She peeked over her shoulder in just enough time, right before they darted out the back doors, to see the bartender coming around the bar.
They were already gone.
It was over.
That’s how fast it happened.
Her hand stayed tucked tightly with Bene’s as he pulled her through the back alley behind the bar, and through the maze of another three. He didn’t stop until they were one block down, and she recognized the familiar brick design of his building. Except it was the side, and not the front. Not that it mattered to her when he pressed her into the brick, his body crowding hers in the best way, leg slipping between her thighs to give her pussy something to grind on while he kissed her harder than ever.
Until her lungs burned.
And all she saw was him.
His hands skimmed over the front of her jeans, unsnapping the button and pulling down the zipper before sliding underneath. She stared down the alley to the busy street where people bustled on by. Not to mention, all the windows around them. What were the chances that this alley would be empty at this time of night? And still, anyone could see them there, if they just thought to look.
Vanna still didn’t care.
“That was crazy,” she breathed against his mouth.
Bene chuckled, lips curving with hers. “Worth it.”
“Shouldn’t make a woman run in heels, Bene.”
“Can I fuck one in them?”
Vanna groaned. “Yes.”

SYNOPSIS
Chicago has never been more fun, or dangerous …
Sent away with his identical twin to get their wild ways under control, Beni Guzzi expects nothing to change. Same crap, new city, right? But if the boss of the Chicago mob can’t set the principes straight, then nothing will.
And then she rolls into town.
Stuck in a job that seems intent to keep her working behind a desk, August Rivera hopes a trip to the windy city for an assignment will make the magazine finally give her a spread. But getting to see her best friend, well, that’s just a bonus.
And then she sees him from across a club.
With a gang causing trouble for the Outfit, and a Capo’s crew in shambles, Beni has a million other things to focus on except the beautiful New Yorker who keeps finding her way into his bed. The thing is, when he’s with August, everything is better—easier.
Falling in love while handling family drama and mafia affairs is anything but simple … and in this business? It only takes a single mistake to lose it all.
That lesson can’t be taught, and it always comes too late.

My Thoughts 💭
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love the Guzzi family!! The wild twins are sent away to force them to get their act together. Working with someone else worked out well for Beni but not so much for his twin Bene. Beni and August was lust at first sight that grew into love and I enjoyed every moment of it! They both kept each other on their toes. I definitely recommend this series! I can’t wait to read Bene’s story.
